Tommy is a UK-trained MD with a PhD in physiology and neuroscience. The majority of his academic work has focused on developing therapies for brain injury in new born infants, but he has published on a variety of topics including adult neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases, as well as nutritional approaches to sports performance.
Tommy received an undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge before attending medical school at the University of Oxford. After working as a junior doctor in central London, he moved to Norway for his PhD work, and then to the University of Washington as a postdoc.
His current research interests include the physiological and metabolic responses to brain injury, as well as developing easily accessible methods with which to track human health, performance, and longevity. He does this work through academic positions at the University of Washington and the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. Tommy is President of the Physicians for Ancestral Health Society, and on the scientific advisory board of Hintsa Performance, which includes developing nutrition and lifestyle strategies for drivers in elite motorsports.
